How it works
Tipping conventions vary by country, by service type, and by region. In the United States, restaurant servers are typically paid a sub-minimum "tipped wage" with the expectation that tips make up the difference. Standard restaurant tipping ranges from 15% (acceptable for adequate service) to 20–25% (good to excellent service). Tipping below 15% is read as a deliberate signal of poor service.
Other US service tipping conventions: 15–20% for taxi or rideshare drivers, $1–2 per drink at bars, $2–5 per bag for hotel bellhops, 15–20% for hairdressers, $3–5 per night for hotel housekeeping. Tour guides and shuttle drivers usually expect $5–10. Coffee-shop counter service is more flexible — rounding up or adding $1 is common but optional.
Internationally, tipping norms diverge significantly. Japan typically does not tip at all and may even refuse it. Most of Europe includes a service charge in the bill (look for "service compris" or check the small print) and rounding up to the nearest euro is sufficient. Australia and New Zealand tip much less than the US — 10% for excellent service is generous. Always check local custom before traveling.
Whether you tip on the pre-tax subtotal or the post-tax total is debated. Strictly mathematically, tipping pre-tax is correct — the tax is not part of the service. In practice many people just tip on the total to keep the math simple, which adds about 1–2% to the effective tip rate.
This calculator handles three things: applying a percentage to the bill, splitting the resulting total evenly among any number of people, and showing both the tip-per-person and total-per-person amounts. Use the quick-pick buttons (10/15/18/20/22/25) to skip the typing.
