How it works
A time card calculator sums work hours from a list of daily start/end times minus unpaid break minutes. It is the simplest way to translate a paper timesheet or punched clock-in/clock-out times into a total weekly hours number, optionally multiplied by an hourly rate to estimate gross pay.
For each row, enter your start time, end time, and unpaid break in minutes. The calculator computes that day's hours, displays them in the table, and totals all rows. Add or remove rows as needed for the days you worked.
Overnight shifts (where end time is "before" start time, like 23:00 → 07:00) are handled by adding 24 hours to the end time when it would otherwise produce a negative duration. This works for any single-overnight shift; for shifts spanning more than 24 hours, split into two rows.
Unpaid lunch break is the most common reason hours don't add up to (end−start). Most US salaried roles assume a 30–60 minute unpaid lunch; hourly roles vary by employer and state law. California, for example, requires a 30-minute unpaid meal break after 5 hours, with specific rules around when it must be taken.
Gross pay estimation multiplies total hours by your hourly rate, with no overtime, taxes, or deductions. Real take-home is after federal/state taxes (typically 20–30% combined), FICA (7.65%), and any pre-tax deductions like 401(k) and health insurance — usually 60–75% of gross. For overtime: in the US, non-exempt employees earn 1.5× their regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek; some states (California) require it after 8 hours in a day too. This calculator doesn't model overtime — split your hours into regular vs. overtime rows manually if needed.
For ongoing time tracking, dedicated apps (Toggl, Clockify) or your employer's timekeeping system are more practical than a calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How are overnight shifts handled?▾
If end time is before start time, we add 24 hours. Works for any single overnight; longer shifts need two rows.
Does it calculate overtime?▾
No — for overtime, split hours into separate rows for regular vs. overtime rates.
