How it works
Area is measured in squared length units: square meters (m²), square feet (ft²), square miles (mi²), and so on. Land specifically is often measured in acres (US) or hectares (metric). 1 acre = 43,560 ft² ≈ 4,047 m² ≈ 0.405 hectares. 1 hectare = 10,000 m² = 2.471 acres.
For house and apartment sizes: 1 m² = 10.76 ft². A 100 m² apartment is roughly 1,076 ft². A 2,500 ft² home is about 232 m². Real-estate listings switch between the two depending on country.
For land: an American football field (excluding end zones) is about 1.32 acres or 0.535 hectares. A soccer pitch varies but is roughly 1.8 acres / 0.71 ha for a regulation FIFA field.
For agriculture: typical US farm sizes are measured in hundreds or thousands of acres; European farms often in tens or hundreds of hectares. 1 km² = 100 hectares = 247.1 acres.
Be careful when converting square units. If 1 inch = 2.54 cm, then 1 in² = 2.54² cm² = 6.45 cm² (not 2.54 cm²). The conversion factor for area is the *square* of the linear conversion factor. This calculator handles that correctly, but if you're doing math by hand, remember to square the linear factor.
For irregular shapes — non-rectangular rooms, polygonal land parcels — break the shape into rectangles or triangles, compute each area separately, and sum. For odd outlines, surveyors use coordinate-based formulas (the "shoelace" formula for polygons).
Frequently asked questions
How big is an acre?▾
43,560 ft² (about 208.7 ft per side if square), or 4,047 m².
Why is 1 in² = 6.45 cm² and not 2.54 cm²?▾
Squaring the unit squares the conversion factor: (2.54)² = 6.45.
